How To Cast The Right Voice Over Talent For Your Commercials

When you're planning an advertising campaign, you need to cast the right voice over for the commercials.

But what constitutes the 'right’ voice over talent?

It can be easy to select a voice based on preconceived ideas of what we THINK a commercial should sound like, or because we've used that style before on previous campaigns.

Say for example you're selling tools. You’re probably thinking of going with a 'blokey' angle.

Sure, it makes sense - but doesn't every other tool shop do that too?

Thinking outside the box could help you stand out from the other commercials on air.

Sure hard sell, in-your-face ‘tough guy’ voice overs can work, but there are plenty of other options.

For example, it might be more effective to use a female voice over talent to sell those tools. This could really grab the attention of your target market and engage with them on whole different level. Sometimes, particularly with radio advertising, choosing an unexpected voice can have a lot more cut through.

Or did you know that research has shown that male voice overs sell cars better than females, but female voice overs sell technology better than their male counterparts?

As The Gruen’s Todd Sampson says, ‘voice over artists are incredibly important for advertising.’

Here's an excerpt from the ABC TV show.
